23 Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Do you see a timeframe in this verse? Listen to your father until you are 21? Listen to him until you move out of the house? Well, no. Listening does not appear to have an expiration date. What about mom? You might not have had a good mom, or she might have been terrific. This verse doesn’t distinguish between those two. God knows something about old age. His Word is His law of protection for our aging parents.
Let me share about my dad. I still hear words he instilled in me. He was building my character. He said I should never lie. Then I would not have to remember who I told what to. Though, he said, you will always remember the truth. Good advice.
And mom? God is all wise. If He tells you not to do something then He knows it is a possibility. Even good moms can push your buttons. When you take care of her there are going to be tough times. It could be resentment that can build up and despise is a strong word. Caution in advance, because God has issued His warning.
Dearest Jesus, open my ears today that I would listen to my earthly father. Not only listen, but hear him. I realize he deserves some of my undivided time today. Lord, honestly? Sometimes mom can get to me when I’m not happy with some of the things she does. Please remind me that God sent You, to die on the cross for me. What sacrifice can I make for my sometimes difficult mother? I thank you for revealing these things by Your Holy Spirit in Your name I pray, amen.
